Discovery 1 Upgrades

KINGPIN Tough Tourer Suspension Kit

A comprehensive suspension and steering upgrade for Defender, Perentie 4x4, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic owners who want touring strength, controlled articulation and predictable behaviour on and off road.

This is a matched long-travel system. We consider the shocks, spring rates, mounting heights, spring retention, steering geometry and driveshaft clearance together, then tailor the setup to your vehicle and how you use it.

What makes the KINGPIN setup different?

• Shocks tuned in-house for your vehicle. Every remote reservoir shock is disassembled and custom tuned by KINGPIN to suit your application and vehicle weight.
• Driveshaft clearance is part of the setup. Increased articulation can cause a factory shaft to bind. We assess shaft travel and joint angles rather than ignoring the effects of the extra suspension movement.
• Geometry matters. We can supply solutions for steering caster and pinion angles affected by a lift, with the aim of restoring appropriate geometry. Ask us about the options for your vehicle.
• Spring rates selected for control as well as travel. In most applications we favour correctly rated linear coils. With rear spring retention, this helps introduce rear roll stiffness, encourages the front suspension to work—particularly with factory front radius arms—and supports a more stable, predictable setup, including off-camber driving. Road use and the terrain you drive influence the recommendation; a flexible or variable-rate coil can be the better choice for some applications.

What is included?

• Four Superior Engineering 2.0 remote reservoir monotube shocks with 11.5-inch stroke, custom valved to your vehicle: two front and two rear.
• KINGPIN front shock turrets with inbuilt dislocation cones, with mounting height matched to the shocks supplied.
• KINGPIN rear pin-conversion shock mounts, designed to accommodate the 11.5-inch shocks without extended rear bumpstops on the matched Defender setup. We confirm the mounting and bumpstop arrangement for other vehicles.
• KINGPIN HD rear spring retainer system, retaining the coils at the top and bottom with high-tensile hardware. The set is matched to the vehicle; tell us if helper airbags are fitted or planned.
• KINGPIN HD front lower spring retainers.
• KINGPIN front shock reservoir mounting brackets for neat reservoir mounting at the turrets.
• KINGPIN 4140 solid chromoly track rod and drag link, matched to your vehicle.
• LEMFÖRDER tie-rod ends—three for the standard Defender arrangement and four for Discovery 1.
• HEL Performance custom braided steel brake lines, with the vehicle-appropriate kit selected below.
• Tough Dog adjustable steering damper.
• Tough Dog heavy-duty adjustable panhard rod, matched to your vehicle, to centre the front axle after a lift. Supply the VIN for a 2002 Defender so we can confirm the correct mounting-bolt configuration.
• Gwyn Lewis heavy-duty cranked rear trailing arms, powder coated black and supplied with axle-end bushes and chassis-end nuts.
• SuperPro rear trailing-arm chassis-end bushes.
• KINGPIN fuel filter relocation bracket and fitting kit for Td5 and Puma/TDCi Defenders. This bracket is not required for pre-Td5 Defenders, including 300Tdi, Perentie, D1 or RRC.

Choose your vehicle, coils and load

Select your vehicle, choose whether to retain suitable existing coils or add front and rear coils, then select front accessories, usual rear load, front shaft and brake-line kit. Only the relevant coil choices are shown for the selected vehicle, and the displayed price updates with your selections.

Front accessory choices are no bar or winch, bull bar only, or bull bar and winch. Rear coil choices use the vehicle's own spring sizes and load ratings. D110/D130 and suitable Perentie applications include custom 290lb no-load coils and the 250kg, 350kg and 500kg load choices. D90 and D1 have their own coil options. We confirm spring rate, free length, loaded height and compatibility with the shock travel before supply. RRC coils and shaft fitment require confirmation.

Choose your HEL brake-line kit

• Defender / Perentie / County 3-piece kit
• Defender 4-piece kit for ABS brakes
• Discovery 1 3-piece kit

The selector shows the relevant kits for your vehicle. Confirm the brake-line arrangement, including ABS fitment, before ordering. HEL lines are made to KINGPIN specifications, with length and colour confirmed for your setup. Stocked colours are carbon or black; other colours can be arranged. RRC brake-line fitment requires confirmation.

Front driveshaft and suspension clearance

We recommend a suitable wide-angle front shaft with this long-travel kit. A factory shaft may be usable temporarily in some setups, but it must be checked for binding throughout the suspension's operating range. Contact us to confirm the correct shaft for your engine, transfer case and suspension geometry.

Puma Defenders fitted with 2-inch coils require a front double cardan wide-angle shaft and KINGPIN front multi-position bumpstop spacers. This includes vehicles retaining existing 2-inch coils. Select the MEGA front shaft if required; the bumpstop spacers are arranged separately.

Optional front bumpstop and turret setup

Where appropriate, we can add KINGPIN front bumpstop extensions and lower the turret mounting height to transfer some available uptravel into additional downtravel. A 25mm change is one setup option.

We assess this against your use and loaded spring height. High-speed off-road driving, beach work, aggressive driving and front spring loaded heights below 300mm need particular consideration; preserving compression travel can be more important than chasing extra droop. This is a matched setup decision, not a universal add-on.

Important swaybar compatibility

The standard swaybars cannot be retained with this kit's long-travel configuration. Where a rear swaybar is wanted, use the KINGPIN rear off-road swaybar conversion kit and confirm the setup with us.

Custom and partial kits

Already have suitable heavy-duty parts? We can work around them and supply a partial or tailored package. The steering damper and adjustable panhard rod are included in the standard kit but can be removed by arrangement where they are not required. We can also discuss caster correction, pinion-angle solutions, helper-airbag-compatible rear retainers and other vehicle-specific requirements.

Contact us by phone or through the contact form with your vehicle details, existing components, usual load and intended use. We can prepare a tailored proposal with a shipping estimate and confirm the final component selection and shock tuning before supply.

Perentie 4x4 brake lines: The Defender 3-piece HEL brake-line kit is supplied for Perentie. The Defender 4-piece ABS kit does not apply to Perentie.

Perentie front driveshaft option: Selecting a front shaft for Perentie supplies our dedicated Perentie MEGA HD wide-angle double cardan front shaft, made to the correct Perentie length.

KINGPIN Outback Tourer Suspension Kit

A matched suspension and steering package for a dedicated touring Land Rover, with custom-tuned remote reservoir shocks, heavy-duty steering rods and cranked rear trailing arms. Designed for standard height through to 2-inch lift, with shock-mount heights matched to the shocks supplied.

What is included?

• Four Superior Engineering 2.0 remote reservoir shocks — front and rear, with 8.5-inch stroke and KINGPIN custom valving to suit your vehicle, load and use.
• KINGPIN front shock turrets — without dislocation cones, height matched to the shocks.
• KINGPIN rear pin-to-pin conversion shock mounts. This configuration also allows a compatible 80/100 Series LandCruiser front shock to be sourced as an emergency replacement when remote touring.
• KINGPIN front reservoir mounting brackets — mounts the reservoirs to the front face of our turrets; two small mounting holes require drilling.
• KINGPIN rear reservoir mounting plates for Defender/Perentie. Puma uses the existing threaded bosses; pre-Puma/Perentie fitment requires M10 rivnuts/nutserts. These plates are excluded from D1 kits. RRC reservoir mounting requires confirmation.
• Gwyn Lewis heavy-duty cranked rear trailing arms — pair, powder coated black, with axle-end bushes and new chassis-end nuts. Offset axle-end construction provides clearance at suspension dropout. Older RRC vehicles may require compatible chassis bushes.
• KINGPIN solid chromoly track rod and drag link, matched to the vehicle.
• LEMFÖRDER tie-rod ends — three for the standard Defender setup, four for D1.
• HEL Performance custom braided steel brake-line kit — choose the vehicle-appropriate kit in the selector.
• Tough Dog adjustable steering damper. Contact us if you wish to arrange a kit without this component.
• KINGPIN fuel filter relocation bracket and fitting kit included only for Td5 and Puma/TDCi Defenders. Not required for D1, RRC, Perentie or pre-Td5 Defenders, including 300Tdi.

Choose your setup

Select your vehicle, retain your existing suitable coils or add front and rear coils, then choose your front accessories, usual rear load, front shaft and brake-line kit. The displayed price updates with your selections.

Front accessory choices are no bar or winch, bull bar only, or bull bar and winch. Rear coil choices are specific to the vehicle. D110/D130 and suitable Perentie applications include custom 290lb no-load coils and the 250kg, 350kg and 500kg load options. D90 and D1 use their own coil sizes and load ratings. We confirm final spring specification and tuning before supply. RRC coils and shaft fitment require confirmation.

HEL brake-line choices

• Defender / Perentie / County 3-piece kit
• Defender 4-piece kit

Spring selection

We will contact you after ordering to confirm the correct spring rates for your vehicle.

Vehicle weight, bullbar/winch, rear accessories, constant load and towing use all influence the spring choice. If you already know your loaded front and rear heights or axle weights, include them with your order.

Land Rover Heavy-Duty Front Double Cardan Propshaft

Required: front swaybar spacers

If you retain the front swaybar, you must run either our 37mm Front Swaybar Spacer Kit (2 Position) or our 55mm Front Swaybar Spacers with this shaft. Choose the kit to suit your suspension and clearance requirements; you do not need both.

• 37mm, 2 position: lowers the front swaybar 37mm, with mounting positions that move the rear bush mount back 15mm or 30mm to help with link clearance.
• 55mm: lowers the front swaybar directly down 55mm. Our listing specifies this option for a Mega HD shaft with a 2-inch lift and shocks longer than the factory 550mm open length.

Check clearance throughout suspension travel. If you are unsure which kit suits your setup, send us your vehicle, lift and shock open length before ordering.

MEGA EXTREME Wide Angle HD | Defender & Discovery 1

Designed for Land Rover vehicles requiring a heavy-duty front propshaft, particularly those with modified suspension geometry or increased axle articulation.

These propshafts feature a heavy-duty double cardan assembly, wide-angle universal joints and a greaseable slip joint arrangement.

Key features

• 40° wide-angle double cardan end
• 30° wide-angle opposite joint
• Heavy-duty 60mm torque tube
• Greaseable 2020-series universal joints
• Rilsan-coated 18-spline slip assembly
• 110mm slip movement
• Heavy-duty round flange configuration

Vehicle compatibility

Select the appropriate variant for your Defender Puma, TD5, 300Tdi, 200Tdi or Discovery 1.

Important fitting information

These heavy-duty shafts require suitable clearance throughout the suspension's operating range. Front swaybar clearance must be checked, particularly on lifted vehicles or those fitted with extended-travel shocks.

Check flange compatibility, suspension clearance and lubrication requirements before installation.

Before you order

Confirm your vehicle and engine variant, front flange arrangement and suspension setup. If your vehicle has an engine or gearbox conversion, tell us before ordering rather than choosing by the original vehicle badge alone. We can confirm whether measurements are needed and how to take them.

Ask KINGPIN to check your propshaft application. Include your model, engine, gearbox, suspension lift and any existing driveline modifications.

Fitting hardware and tools

If you need replacement fasteners, see the propshaft nut and bolt kits and select the FRONT option for this shaft. Check what you already have and what is supplied with your order before adding extra hardware.

The Land Rover propshaft nut tool is designed for access to 9/16-inch propshaft nuts. Confirm your fastener size before ordering.

For other vehicles or rear-shaft applications, browse the full propshaft range.

KINGPIN SOLID 4140 CHROMOLY DRAG LINKS!!

*DISCOVERY 1 ONLY - OR USE WITH D1 CONVERSIONS INTO DEFENDERS*

These SOLID Chromoly drag links are the strongest bars, and have the added benefit of having a reasonably high amount of 'spring' in them due to the material properties. Chromoly, compared to regular hi-tensile steel is better suited to spring back to its original shape rather than bending and then not returning back to its original shape.

If you want the strongest bar available...this is the one for you.

Also included with every KINPIN FAB Chromoly rod is a pair of KINGPIN Fab Extra HD Stainless steel HD Jam nuts!

We recommend using ONLY German LEMFORDER tie rod ends with this product, due to the high quality of these joints and superior casting strength over cheaper ones.

***ALL BARS COME PRE-GREASED WITH COPPER OR NICKLE ANTI-SIEZE!***

Tough Dog Heavy-Duty Adjustable Panhard Rod

When a solid-axle Land Rover is lifted, the fixed-length panhard rod can pull the front axle sideways relative to the chassis. An adjustable panhard rod allows the axle to be re-centred after the suspension height changes.

Features

• Heavy-duty solid-bar construction
• Adjustable length for axle centring
• Bonded rubber bushes in most applications
• Compatible with SuperPro bushes where applicable

Available applications

• Defender pre-2002
• Defender post-2002
• Perentie
• Discovery 1
• Discovery 2
• Range Rover Classic

2002 Defender owners: supply your VIN at checkout so we can confirm the correct mounting-bolt configuration.

Tough Dog SV Adjustable Steering Damper

The Tough Dog SV steering damper gives you adjustable steering damping so you can tune the steering response to suit tyre size, road conditions and vehicle use.

Features

• Adjustable damping
• 35mm bore
• Heavy-duty construction
• Helps reduce bump-steer feedback and steering kickback
• Multiple Land Rover mounting configurations available

Fitment

Select the correct mounting arrangement for your vehicle:

• Defender - pin to eye
• Discovery 1 / Range Rover Classic - pin to pin
• Discovery 2 - eye to eye

Important

A steering damper will not repair worn steering or suspension components. If the vehicle has shimmy, wobble or poor steering behaviour, diagnose and repair the underlying cause first. The damper is there to control steering movement, not hide a mechanical fault.

Larger and heavier tyres can increase steering kickback, so an upgraded damper can be worthwhile once the steering system itself is in good condition.

KINGPIN Rear Pin-Conversion Shock Mounts

Convert the rear of your Land Rover to a pin-to-pin shock arrangement and open up better long-travel shock options.

Applications

• Defender 90 / 110 / 130
• Discovery 1
• Range Rover Classic

Why use a pin-conversion mount?

• Allows use of pin-to-pin rear shocks
• Designed around lifted and long-travel Land Rover suspension setups
• Improves shock-bush alignment at common lifted ride heights
• Suitable for selected long-stroke remote-reservoir shock combinations
• Manufactured in-house from Australian materials

On the matched Defender setups we commonly build, these mounts can accommodate long-stroke rear shocks without automatically requiring extended rear bumpstops. Final shock length, spring height, bumpstop clearance and tyre clearance must still be checked on the actual vehicle.

***D2 AXLES ARE NOT MADE WITH HI-TOUGH MATERIAL - BUT EN26 STEEL***

Maxidrive Heavy-Duty Rear Axle & Drive Flange Kit

Australian-made heavy-duty rear axles and drive flanges for Land Rover applications.

Land Rover rear axles and drive flanges are a known weak point once tyre size, load, engine torque or off-road use starts increasing. This kit replaces both rear axle shafts and drive flanges with Maxidrive heavy-duty components manufactured from Hi-Tuff material.

Kit includes

• 2 x Maxidrive heavy-duty rear axle shafts
• 2 x Maxidrive heavy-duty drive flanges
• 2 x Corteco hub seals

Choose the correct fitment

Select the axle / differential arrangement that matches your vehicle. Options include selected Discovery 1, Defender, Perentie / County, Range Rover Classic and Series applications.

If your axle or differential combination is not listed, contact KINGPIN Fab before ordering.

Oil-fed wheel bearing conversion

We recommend converting suitable applications to oil-fed wheel bearings while fitting this kit. The supplied hub seals are used as part of this conversion.

The job involves removing the brake caliper and hub/disc assembly, removing the inner stub-axle seal, fitting the supplied hub seal in the revised position, then refilling the differential and hub area correctly. Puma and TD5 vehicles will commonly use a single-use hub nut, so check what your vehicle requires before starting.

Important: use the correct sealant on the drive-flange fasteners. Do not substitute ordinary thread locker where pipe/thread sealant is specified.

Flange fit

Maxidrive axles are intentionally a firm press fit into the drive flange. This is normal. Follow the supplied fitting instructions and use a suitable timber block with a rubber or dead-blow mallet where required.

Its time to give that weak front end some much needed strength!

These Axles are 24spline at the Diff end and 23 Spline at the CV end.

They are suitable for use:

• In your 10 spline County or Perentie - to convert to the stronger 24 spline. This is common to do when fitting a locker or an LSD to the front of these trucks.

• When you upgrade your Discovery 1,  RRC, or Defender to either Ashcroft or County CVs which have a stronger 23spline female spline over the standard 32spline. (You will need an additional conversion kit to run the County C.Vs. Ask us for more information if your interested in this option, as it is cheaper than going all out and getting Ashcrofts to run with this axle  & flange kit. See notes below in regards to converting a post 93-94 rig

INTERESTING FACTOIDS:

• 32 CV end spline shaft cross section is 542mm sq.

• 23 CV end spline shaft cross section is 714mm sq

• THAT IS A 23% INCREASE IN SECTIONAL AREA OVER A STD 32 SPLINE CV END AXLE

• For a Perentie or County converting to 24spline at the diff...the size and thus strength difference is also a significant gain!

If converting a post 93-94 rig and are not using the Maxidrive conversion kit we supply - you will also need RTC4820 circlip and FTC254 bush. In the 'options drop down' this is the 'fitting kit'.

• County & Perentie need MDE5806 Flange

• Defender & Disco need MDE859 Flange

Heavy Duty CV joints for Land Rover vehicles with a FIVE YEAR manufacturers warranty

This is the STRONGEST direct replacement available for your Land Rovers famously weak C.Vs

• Made with a 300m inner & cage, and a 4340 Chromoly bell

You will need to convert to 23/24 spline half-shafts to run these if you have not already.

There has for some time been a need for a stronger CV joints especially with the recent trend of fitting 35" tyres or similar, some people shrink a band around the existing CV bell, some fit the early type AEU2522 to the later axles as this is the strongest one Land Rover can offer but these still fail under hard use.

INTERESTING FACTOIDS:

• 32 spline shaft cross section is 542mm sq.
• 23 spline shaft cross section is 714mm sq
• THAT IS A 23% INCREASE IN SECTIONAL AREA OVER A STD 32 SPLINE CV END AXLE

Ashcroft have manufactured the CV from scratch using improved materials, the inner and cage are from 300M and the bell is from 4340 Chromoly. There are a number of design changes which have been incorporated to produce a CV far exceeding the strength of anything else on the market.  Please click for product technical data - housing & domemass.

These units have been subject to some very thorough testing in the UK ,Europe & Australia and allow the driver to confidently use the front locker when on full steering lock even with the vehicle on it's nose. We are also  able to offer late style CVs which are ABS compatible. Please click here for some of Ashcrofts test results.

Please note the manufacturers  five year warranty is only valid for vehicles with up to and including 35" tyres.

***ALSO AVAIL FOR COUNTY/PERENTIE - PLEASE JUST LEAVE A NOTE WITH YOUR ORDER***

Ashlockers are renowned in the Land Rover communities as being the go too choice for a selectable diff locker...and for good reason!

ROVER-24 = Fit to Perentie/County front to convert to 24spline! (These axles needed for the conversion)

ROVER-24 = Fit all Defender, Discovery 1, Discovery 2 & metric RRC fronts. Will also fit Defender 90, Discovery 1, & Discovery 2 rears.

DEFENDER P38 = All later model Defender 110 & 130 P38 Rear style diffs

Concept
There are many types of lockers available for Landrover vehicles but all seem to have a weak point or Achilles heel, so Ashcroft set out to design a locker from a blank canvas to be cost effective, strong and without the weaknesses of other designs.

Design
Ashcroft wanted a selectable locker which would fit into the rover diff casing with minimal installation work, i.e, without mods to the axle housing. We looked at electric and pneumatic activation and decided pneumatic was preferable for reliability and simplicity. One of the key requirements for our design was zero air leaks as this is one of the main issues with other air operated lockers. To achieve this we opted for a static piston rather than the rotating seal used on other air lockers, which was prone to leaks. We also wanted to ensure we had a full 6mm of engagement when locked as other air lockers have just 2.5mm and are prone to slipping out of lock when loaded.

The final design settled on a 4 pin diff centre; one of the diff side gears has an outer ring of dog teeth around it which a locking collar engage with when locked, thus locking collar is on the crown wheel side, the locking collar is held with 4 pins which pass through the diff centre on the non crown wheel side . Outside the diff centre the 4 pins are peened to a steel thrust ring, this assembly forms a robust all steel ‘cage’, not plastic like other designs which were prone to failing.

On the non crown wheel side inside the journal end cap is a cylinder in which sits a bronze piston, the piston has a groove around the inside and outside diameters which O rings sit in. Once the piston is fitted a retaining ring is bolted around the end of the cylinder to stop the piston coming out, air is fed to the cylinder through a copper pipe to a 90 deg compression fitting which fits to the outside diameter of the cylinder. When air is applied the piston moves along the cylinder until it reaches the retaining ring, it does not spin in the cylinder, the cylinder is static and sits on a bronze bush at the side of the diff centre. Inside the journal bearing on the cylinder side is a bronze thrust ring to hold the cylinder. A locking tab is fitted to one of the journal end cap bolts and locates in a cut out in the cylinder to stop it rotating.

The copper air feed pipe goes from the side of the cylinder through the diff housing, it doesn’t have to pass over the crown wheel.

The lockers are assembled on Ashcrofts premises and supplied with switch (front and rear fascias), solenoid, air line and all required fittings, excludes air compressor.

We have used 6mm pneumatic push fit fitting to the locker as we have found that other air lockers that have threaded fitting and hoses will either tear a pipe or break a fitting if the air line gets snagged on a branch etc, our locker uses these pneumatic ‘push fit’ fittings which will still get snagged but just pull out so you just need to push back in to fix rather than having to replace hoses etc.

Operation

When air is applied, the static annular piston moves across and pushes the spinning thrust collar which slide the 4 pins and move the locking collar over the side gear teeth to lock the diff, the diff is unlocked when the air pressure is released and 4 return springs push the locking collar out of engagement with the side gear. These diffs need 75-100 Psi to operate.

Materials
Whilst we want the unit to be cost effective, the strength is paramount, all steel parts are turned from billet UK spec EN24T, Gears are 8620, locking collar is 300M.

Key features :

• Full 6mm of locking collar engagement
• Static annular piston, minimises risk of air leaks
• Large diameter piston gives a 55% increase of hold in force over competitors
• High spec materials throughout
• 2 year manaacturers warranty

GWYN LEWIS HD REAR TRAILING ARMS

Fits:- Defender 90/110/130, Discovery 1, RRc, standard to 4″ suspension lifts.

*NOTE* These are Powder Coated BLACK and are CRANKED. (Blue avail on request)

They are an absolute must have for any Land Rover that is used off road, as the standard arms are just not strong enough to cope with all the axle and suspension articulation or taking and sort of knocks in our tough Aussie environment. We have dealt with more people than youd care to count that have 'taco'd' a rear arm!

These are probably the strongest cranked style rear arms you can get at 12.5KG a pair, using 43mm x 5mm wall tube on the outside and 28mm x 3.5mm wall on the inside, these arms are sand blasted and are double powder coated 1 primer and 2 top coat Black.

Come complete with the bush in the axle end and a new nut on the chassis end, the axle end is offset welded to stop the arm fouling the axle mounting on full suspension dropout, suitable for standard to 4 inch suspension lifts.

On older RRC you will require a chassis bush as the older ones had imperial threads and the bush has a smaller hole in it. If you are unsure the older ones have a 24mm nut on the chassis end, ours are metric M20 thread and a 30mm spanner fits the nut on the chassis end. Most rear arms are metric.

Rear A Frame Ball & Joint Kit
