BMW M57 Wide Block - MT82 Adapter + MOUNT Kit – TDCI Puma

$4,400.00
/
Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Wide-block M57 compatibility

Supports all wide-block M57 variants, single or twin turbo: 304D2, 306D3, 306D4 and 306D5. All twin-turbo installations require a P38 steering-box conversion to allow engine fitment and avoid fouling the steering box.

Check the remaining chassis, gearbox and kit-specific requirements before ordering.

Compatible wide-block single- and twin-turbo M57 engines are supported. Twin-turbo installations require a P38 steering-box conversion for engine fitment. The specified wide-block and MT82 requirements still apply.

BMW M57N / M57N2 Wide Block to MT82 Adapter Kit – Defender Puma

Fitting a BMW M57 to your Puma Defender and keeping the six-speed manual? This gearbox adapter kit gives you the foundation for your manual M57 conversion. Bolt-in engine mounts for your TDCi Puma are an optional add-on; select them in the product options if required.

Designed for compatible M57N and M57N2 wide block single- or twin-turbo engines, the kit connects the BMW engine to your Defender’s MT82 six-speed manual gearbox.

STANDARD HD CLUTCH PARTS — EASIER SERVICING

The kit is designed around the Land Rover/Ford single-mass flywheel arrangement, using readily available Defender TDCi clutch components and factory clutch hydraulics. No custom clutch plate or specialist hydraulic setup required!

That means straightforward replacement parts when it’s time for servicing, without being tied to a one-off clutch assembly. It also removes the need to purchase an expensive replacement BMW dual-mass flywheel for your conversion.

NO CUTTING OF THE GEARBOX CASING

The adapter fits without cutting or modifying the MT82 gearbox casing, simplifying installation and avoiding the risk of mistakes when altering the housing.

Keeping the casing intact also helps preserve its suitability for a future exchange gearbox — a modified housing may not be accepted as an exchange core.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • CNC-machined gearbox adapter plate, dimensionally checked using coordinate measuring equipment (CMM).
  • CNC-machined crankshaft-to-flywheel adapter, also CMM checked.
  • Alignment dowels for accurate positioning.
  • Additional adapter hardware and fasteners.
  • Remanufactured Bosch or Visteon starter motor.
  • Assembly instructions with an itemised, numbered parts list.

OPTIONAL BOLT-IN ENGINE MOUNTS

Add bolt-in engine mounts for your TDCi Puma Defender for $585 extra. Engine mounts are supplied only when the engine-mount option is selected.

OPTIONAL LOF CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL

Add a LOF clutch and flywheel for $1,830 extra — a convenient option if you’re replacing your clutch and flywheel as part of the conversion.

Package Price AUD
Adapter kit only — no engine mounts or clutch $4,400
Adapter kit + Puma bolt-in engine mounts $4,985
Adapter kit + LOF clutch & flywheel — no engine mounts $6,230
Adapter kit + Puma bolt-in engine mounts + LOF clutch & flywheel $6,815

FITMENT & INSTALLATION

  • For Defender 2.4 / 2.2 TDCi Puma models fitted with the MT82 six-speed manual gearbox.
  • Suits compatible BMW M57N / M57N2 wide block single- or twin-turbo engines. Check your engine’s block configuration before ordering, or email us to confirm.
  • Aluminium-block M57N2 engines require one M12 Helicoil installed in the engine block. Helicoil not included.
  • Uses the Land Rover/Ford single-mass flywheel arrangement.
  • Engine mounts are supplied only when the engine-mount option is selected.
  • Clutch and flywheel are supplied only when the LOF option is selected.

A NOTE ON DRIVETRAIN NOISE

A single-mass flywheel can transmit more drivetrain noise than a dual-mass setup. Almost everyone reports no additional neutral-idle gearbox noise during testing with a healthy MT82 running the correct oil.

Some additional noise can occur during low-speed manoeuvring, particularly with a higher-mileage transfer case. Depending on the condition of your drivetrain, additional noise may also be noticeable at higher engine speeds under heavy load...but then again, not in every case either!!!

The base kit covers the gearbox adapter components. Engine mounts and the LOF clutch and flywheel are optional extras, supplied only when selected. Additional parts and work are required to complete an M57 conversion.

Unsure which M57 you’ve got or which engine you need? Get in touch before ordering and we’ll help confirm the right kit for your build.

KINGPIN M57 Low-Profile A/C Compressor Bracket

$360.00
/
Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

KINGPIN M57 Low-Profile A/C Compressor Bracket

Need more room on the right-hand side of your M57 engine bay? Move the A/C compressor closer to the engine block while retaining the BMW compressor.

For Land Rover Defender, Nissan Patrol, Toyota LandCruiser and other M57 swaps where compressor clearance is tight. Suitability depends on your engine, compressor and engine-bay layout; check the version and clearance requirements below.

The KINGPIN bracket replaces the factory BMW compressor bracket and moves the A/C compressor approximately 27mm closer to the engine, creating more clearance between the compressor and the Land Rover steering box.

Features

  • Designed from 3D scan data for accurate belt alignment
  • Powder-coated finish
  • Fixing kit included
  • Correct-length Gates Micro-V stretch belt supplied
  • Compatible with the House of Torque engine mounts supplied by KINGPIN Fab
  • Compatible compressor families include selected E53, E70, E83 and E60 applications

Choose the correct version

M57N version: moves the compressor inward by approximately 27mm. This version is for iron-block M57N applications and does not suit aluminium-block M57N2 engines.

M57N2 version: moves the compressor inward by approximately 27mm and approximately 30mm lower to improve intake-pipe / A/C-line clearance. This version can also be used on suitable iron-block M57N applications.

Defender clearance requirements

  • M57N2 setup: harmonic balancer to inside of passenger-side chassis rail must be approximately 260mm or less
  • M57N setup: harmonic balancer to inside of passenger-side chassis rail must be approximately 270mm or less

A stretch-belt fitting tool is required for installation.

Contact us before ordering if you are using a Pace Automotive Land Rover adapter.

Common questions before ordering

Can I use it in an M57-swapped Patrol or LandCruiser?

This bracket addresses compressor clearance at the engine. A Patrol, LandCruiser or other swap still needs an individual check of engine position, compressor type, chassis and steering clearance, belt alignment and A/C hose routing. The Defender measurements above are not a universal fitment test for other vehicles.

Patrol note: we have had a Patrol owner report that fitting the M57N version gave noticeably more clearance around the brake-line tab area. This may be useful on Patrol conversions where the standard compressor position is tight, but the result will depend on the engine position and mount kit being used. Send us photos and your mount setup if you want us to help check clearance before ordering.

What should I check before installation?

Identify your engine version and compressor before choosing the bracket. Have the required stretch-belt fitting tool available and check the current fitting instructions for your supplied kit before installation. If your engine casting or mounting arrangement differs, contact us before making modifications.

Not sure which version to choose?

Send KINGPIN your vehicle, engine version and compressor details, along with clear photos of the compressor side of the engine and the clearance you need. We can help check the application before you order.

M57N mounts for a RHD TDCI Defender: important turbo notes.

Important: standard M57N 3-bolt turbo does not fit

This mount kit will not work with the standard M57N turbo in its standard location.

When using these bolt-in TDCI mounts with an M57N engine—most commonly the E53 X5 in Australia—you will need to convert to the later M57N2 turbo and exhaust-manifold setup.

We can supply complete conversion kits—email us to enquire—and individual parts to help complete the conversion. Browse turbo conversion parts →

  • Iron-block M57N engine.
  • RHD Defender TDCI chassis.
  • Compatible ZF automatic: 6HP26 / 6HP28X / 8HP70X.
  • The 2025-version 6/8HP-to-LT230 adapter we stock.

  • Engine and gearbox brackets.
  • Bolts and fixings.

The mount kit is bolt-in without cutting or welding the original chassis and using original propshaft lengths with the specified combination. That does not remove the turbo and ancillary work above. Mechanical competence is required.
