BMW M57N / M57N2 Wide Block to MT82 Adapter Kit – Defender Puma

Fitting a BMW M57 to your Puma Defender and keeping the six-speed manual? This package brings together the gearbox adapter kit and included bolt-in engine mounts for your TDCi Puma, giving you the foundation for your manual M57 conversion.

Designed for compatible M57N and M57N2 wide block single-turbo engines, the kit connects the BMW engine to your Defender’s MT82 six-speed manual gearbox.

STANDARD HD CLUTCH PARTS — EASIER SERVICING

The kit is designed around the Land Rover/Ford single-mass flywheel arrangement, using readily available Defender TDCi clutch components and factory clutch hydraulics. No custom clutch plate or specialist hydraulic setup required!

That means straightforward replacement parts when it’s time for servicing, without being tied to a one-off clutch assembly. It also removes the need to purchase an expensive replacement BMW dual-mass flywheel for your conversion.

NO CUTTING OF THE GEARBOX CASING

The adapter fits without cutting or modifying the MT82 gearbox casing, simplifying installation and avoiding the risk of mistakes when altering the housing.

Keeping the casing intact also helps preserve its suitability for a future exchange gearbox — a modified housing may not be accepted as an exchange core.

OPTIONAL LOF CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL

Add a LOF clutch and flywheel for $1,750 extra — a convenient option if you’re replacing your clutch and flywheel as part of the conversion.

FITMENT & INSTALLATION

• For Defender 2.4 / 2.2 TDCi Puma models fitted with the MT82 six-speed manual gearbox.
• Suits compatible BMW M57N / M57N2 wide block single-turbo engines. Check your engine’s block configuration before ordering, or email us to confirm.
• Aluminium-block M57N2 engines require one M12 Helicoil installed in the engine block. Helicoil not included.
• Uses the Land Rover/Ford single-mass flywheel arrangement.
• Clutch and flywheel are supplied only when the LOF option is selected.

A NOTE ON DRIVETRAIN NOISE

A single-mass flywheel can transmit more drivetrain noise than a dual-mass setup. Almost everyone reports no additional neutral-idle gearbox noise during testing with a healthy MT82 running the correct oil.

Some additional noise can occur during low-speed manoeuvring, particularly with a higher-mileage transfer case. Depending on the condition of your drivetrain, additional noise may also be noticeable at higher engine speeds under heavy load...but then again, not in every case either!!!

This package covers the gearbox adapter components and engine mounts. Additional parts and work are required to complete an M57 conversion.

This kit allows the factory BMW Air Conditioner compressor BRACKET to be binned...in favour of the KINGPIN Fab bracket which will free up and create 27mm more space from the AC compressor and the Land Rover steering box, over using the BMW bracket.

M57N2 VARIANT - MOVES THE AC COMPRESSOR IN THE SAME 27mm, BUT ALSO MOVED IT VERTICALLY DOWN 30mm TO ALLOW THE AC COMPRESSOR LINE FITTINGS TO CLEAR THE INTAKE PIPE WITH THE COMPRSSOR SO CLOSE TO THE BLOCK. (This variant can actually be fitted on a steel block M57N as well)

*IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THESE MOUNTS*

This mount kit will not work with the standard M57N turbo in its standard location.

OPTION 1 – Have the turbo housing clocked and top mount the turbo. This will also require trimming the rocker cover and a custom oil feed pipe.

OPTION 2 – Fit the M57N2 turbo, exhaust manifold, oil feed and intake. This will also require wiring and ECU modifications to run the electronic turbo, but it is widely accepted as an well worthwhile upgrade in any case. We recommend avoiding the E90 variant as it will not clear the AC pump. WE CAN SUPPLY CONVERSION KITS INCL 2nd HAND TURBO, WIRIGN LOOM ADAPTER, VNT ACTUATOR RELOCATOR, INTAKE PIPE, EXHAUST MANIFOLD, TURBO OIL FEED AND DRAIN, GASKETS AND CLAMPS REQ - FOR $1690. ASK US FOR INFO

Both options will require custom turbo oil drains.

The kit is not suitable for 306d4 twin turbo models.

These weld on chassis mounts are a direct replica of the TDCI Puma chassis mounts, which for a Pre TDCI Puma means a few thing worth noting:

1. You are able to now use Bolt-in TDC Engine side mounts such as the House or Torque Mounts we stock
2. This in turn enables you to use the MUCH better TDCI style oil filled engine rubber mounts for your swap (WAY better/more refined than sold rubber!)
3. We also have largely  BOLT-In Mounts available also, that place your LT230 into the Puma position for a complete solution
4. These mounts are designed from 3d scans, so PERFECTLY replicate TDCI Mounting
